The Idaho Territory Sesquicentennial License Plate

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 3:07 PM by Jacqui Gilbert

The Idaho Territory was created by Congress on March 3, 1863. Governor William H. Wallace arrived in Lewiston to commence government business on July 10th of that year. This makes 2013 a special year for Idaho historians.

Representatives John Rusche and Jeff Nesset (District 7) have introduced House Bill 472 to create a special commemorative plate, the proceeds from which will be returned to the historical societies or designated agency of the counties in which the plates are sold.

Each plate will generate $22.00, which is intended for use “to fund projects related to the Idaho Territory sesquicentennial or to fund projects that protect and preserve the heritage or cultural resources of the county.” Renewals will generate $12.00 each, with sample plates returning $17.00.

Historical societies can easily estimate the impact of this legislation. Say, for example, that a county has 10,000 registered passenger cars. If just 1 out of every 50 owners purchases an Idaho sesquicentennial plate, that historical society will receive $4,400.

The bill can be read online at legislature.idaho.gov//legislation/2012/H0472.htm.
